BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA
HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
MAY 2007 VOLUME 46 ISSUE 5

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: Before I get started, I would like to once again apologize for not getting the newsletters out on time last month. I will try my best not to let that happen again. On the good side of that, the "personal delivery" had that special touch, don't you think? I do want to remind you again that our annual bowling tournament is coming up soon and we need to get the applications turned in as soon as possible. This month would be a good start. I listed information concerning the tournament on a separate page after the announcements again and will continue to list it until the tournament is over. Plus I am keeping the information concerning the benefit for Chuck Amendt in the newsletter one more month. A list of needed members to complete teams or double/singles partners for the tournament is on the announcements page. That's really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen opened the meeting and presented the treasurer's report which passed. Four new member applications were voted on and all passed. Arlen went over the tournament entry forms and then mentioned to the club information on Chuck's benefit. The club discussed the possibility of getting new shirts and Dennis said the person with the samples will try to make the next meeting, at which time the club can address any issues that may arise. The discussion on the set-up fee for the new shirts was tabled until we meet in May. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 56 Buzzards at the gathering in April, five that did not bowl and one pacer. Our next scheduled gathering is on May 6th @ Copperfield Bowl 15615 Glen Chase Dr. Houston (281) 550-8710. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: Full names are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure that the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign at the end of the three games. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for the "THREE – IN – A- ROW" roll-off in January.

DID YOU KNOW?
Dolphins swim in circles while they sleep with the eye on the outside of the circle open to keep watch for predators. After a certain amount of time, they reverse and swim in the opposite direction with the opposite eye open.

Note from Jackie:
There are still many that have not shown their 2006 – 2007 sanction cards. I have a list of names of those needing to do this. If you can't attend a meeting to do so, either mail a copy or fax it to me. My address & fax number are both on the news-letter. The June meeting is the time all tournament applications and money need to be turned in. Those not sure if they have the required number of games, I have a list where you sign up for bowling. If your name is not on it, you have the nine already. June is the last month to qualify with the nine games. Thanks for your co-operation, Jackie

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

Joke of the Month:
A redneck family from the hills was visiting the city and they were in a mall for the first time in their lives. The father and son were strolling around while the wife shopped. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, "Paw, what's at?" The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, "Son, I dunno. I ain't never seen anything like that in my entire life, I ain't got no idea'r what it is." While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular number above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Then the walls opened up again and a gorgeous, voluptuous 24 year-old blonde woman stepped out.. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son, "Boy..................go git cha Momma..............."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
Joshua E. Reed, 26, was out on bail on a theft charge. As a condition of his bail, he was ordered to report daily to the sheriff's office in Rutland, Vt. But his car broke down in Woodstock, and "as ridiculous as it sounds, he was concerned about [his] reporting" requirement, says his public defender, Katie Smith, so Reed allegedly stole a car and drove it to his appointment with the sheriff. He now faces an additional 12 years in prison on car theft and related charges. "He says he wasn't thinking," Smith explained.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
A woman who had recently visited South America, where she had safaried in a local rainforest, began to experience severe pains in her left ear, accompanied by headaches, dizziness and constant rustling sounds. It became so serious that exploratory surgery was required, which revealed that a spider had become trapped in her ear. Eventually it had eaten through her eardrum and was living within the aural cavity. The rustling sounds were from the spider crawling around inside her skull. An egg sac was also removed.

INTERESTING FACT:
Spotted skunks do handstands before they spray.

ON THIS DATE:
On May 6, 1937 - Thirty-six people were killed when the hydrogen-filled German zeppelin Hindenburg was destroyed by fire at a tower mooring while docking in Lakehurst, New Jersey. A horrified crowd, gathered to greet the zeppelin's arrival, witnessed the explosion. The filmed footage of the disaster was shown in thousands of movie theaters for many months.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
"I cannot imagine any condition which could cause this ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that."
- Capt. E. J. Smith of the Titanic, 1906.
