MAY 2004 VOLUME XXXXIII ISSUE 5
Hello Fellow Buzzards: Well, I showed up last month but I think my bowling stayed at home. One of these days I’ll figure out what I’m doing and then I can give everyone a run for the money. Anyway, this month’s newsletter is once again a little longer than I had expected. There are a few things concerning the tournament in August and I have included a note from Becky Havely concerning the Houston Women’s Bowling Association which Dennis informed me later also involes the Houston Bowling Association. Check out the announcement page for more information on these. If I leave out a birthday or anniversary or if the dates are wrong, please let me know so I can get that changed. That’s it for now, so on with bowling!!!
Minutes of Meeting:
Arlen opened the meeting and Barbara presented the Treasurer’s report which passed. Three new applications were voted on and also passed. Arlen went over the tournament applications and mentioned to the members that Jackie has a list of those members that do not have enough games bowled. If you are not sure you have bowled enough games, check with Jackie. There are 3 months left to catch up if needed. Dennis presented Jackie a plaque for placing in the tournament held at Del Mar. Arlen stressed once again to the members the importance of staying within the rules of our club pertaining to problems so as not to loose our reputation with the houses we bowl in. Arlen “volunteered” me once again to help those members needing to find double partners or teams before the tournament. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.
Attendance: We had 68 Buzzards at the gathering in April, 1 that did not bowl and 2 pacers. We have had good turn outs in the last few months and hopefully we can keep it up. Hope to see all of you on MAY 2ND @ AMF WINDFERN LANES 14441 N.W. FRWY. (HWAY 290) (713-446-8012). The meeting begins at 1PM and bowling begins AT 2 PM. Everyone must be signed up to bowl by 1:30. We are bowling 4 to a lane and if additional lanes are not available, Jackie will fill in additional bowlers. (REMEMBER TO PAY CASH ONLY FOR YOUR BOWLING AND BRACKETS, AS THIS IS HOW JACKIE AND DENNIS PAY OFF THE WINNERS.)(REMEMBER TO PAY CASH ONLY FOR YOUR BOWLING AND BRACKETS, AS THIS IS HOW JACKIE AND DENNIS PAY OFF THE WINNERS.)
Trivia: Before electricity, what lighting method was used to illuminate bowling lanes?
HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

BOWLING RESULTS Joke of the Month: A 70+-year-old-couple are having problems remembering things, so they decide to see their doctor to find out if anything is wrong with them. They see the doctor and tell him about the memory problems they've been having. After a checkup, the doctor tells them that they are physically fine but might want to start writing things down to help them remember things. They thank the doctor and leave. Later that night while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. "Where are you going?" asks his wife. "To the kitchen," he replies. "Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?" she asks. "Sure," he says. She says, "Maybe you should write it down so you'll remember." "I'll remember," he says. "Well, I would also like some strawberries on top," she says. "You had better write that down cause I know you'll forget." "I can remember that," he says, as he begins to lose his patience. "You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries." "I would also like whipped cream on top," she adds, "I know you will forget that so you better write it down." Hopping mad he says, "I don't need to write that down! I will remember just fine." He fumes into the kitchen to get the food. After about 20 minutes he returns from the kitchen and hands her a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment and says, "You forgot my toast."Payouts, Brackets & High Games / Series

Annual Tournament Information: The applications for the tournament to be held in Tyler on August 12 thru 14 are now available. You can get yours at the next gathering. An envelope with maps, tournament news, hotels etc. will be given with each application. All team captains must have someone pick up one for them if they are not able to attend. Please give yourself enough time to contact the hotel for reservations and be careful with the applications when you fill them out, paying close attention to the food choice and selection of the times you choose to bowl. Reminder: you are to have bowled a total of 9 games between June of 2003 and June of 2004 to qualify to bowl in the tournament. If you are not sure if you qualify, Jackie will have a list of those with less than 9 games current. The nine games need to bowled before or during the June gathering.
Notes From Jackie Concerning The Tyler Tournament: Those not having a 2002-2003 book average but are bowling in a league, must have a verification filled out and signed by your league Secretary. Let me know if you need a verification so I can give you the form to be filled out. Have this done and turn in with the application. Also, anyone living out of the Houston area in another bowling Association, must do the same. This has to be done for me to verify that the information on the applications is correct. They are sent to Tyler with the tournament applications. Put your name as printed in the average book. Note if you want to go by a nick-name. The deadline for me to get these to Tyler is June 15th. I always send them in by the 10th of the month by registered mail to make sure they are received in time. Therefore, at the June 6th meeting, you must have them turned in to me. Barbara handles the money part and I do the rest. If not turned in by the 6th, they will not be accepted for any reason. It has been a great help to have a lot of you turning them in at the May meeting. Barbara and I really appreciate this. It helps us get things in order sooner. This gives me plenty of time without being rushed to check them and time to contact the team captain if needed.
ALSO, REMEMBER TO PAY AS FOLLOWS: Checks are to be made out to the Houston Buzzard Club 1check for the tournament (all team members fees) & 1 check for the dinner/dance.Note from Becky Havely: The Houston Women's Bowling Association and The Houston Bowling Association has some exciting news that they would like to share with the women and men bowlers of the Houston Buzzard Club. On Friday, April 2, Deborah Duncan, KHOU-TV 11 anchor, rolled the first ball to open the 67th TWBA Championship Tournament. Deborah brushed up on her bowling skills this week with the help of Carol Norman and Donna Conners. Deborah's mother was an avid bowler in Taiwan while her father was in the military. Deborah is committed to helping promote the sport and show Houston just how dedicated our HWBA and HBA members are. She will be doing her morning show, live from Dynamic Lanes, on Tuesday April 20. Any female or male member of the Houston Buzzard Club is encouraged to attend. The morning show begins at 6:00 a.m. so they would need to be at Dynamic Lanes by 5:30 a.m. Deborah will be doing as many personal interviews with the bowlers as she can.
If anyone has any questions, they can call me at 281-463-3821, or e-mail me at havely@charter.net. They can also call the HWBA office at 713-874-1277 or e-mail hwba@bowlhouston.com.
One more thing, if anyone is interested in subbing while the state tournament is in town, please have them call Cheryl at the HWBA office.
Tournament Bowlers: I have one person looking for a doubles partner and team member and one person looking for a place on a team. If you can help with this, let me know at the next gathering and I will pass it on. Thank You.
