HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
March 2007 VOLUME 46 ISSUE 3

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: Well, it’s about that time again for the annual tournament so start getting your teams together. I have put information concerning the tournament on a separate page after the announcements. Dennis found a large pair of sunglasses at our January gathering at Del Mar. Contact him if you think they may be yours. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen opened the meeting and Barbara presented the treasurer’s report which passed. Six new member applications were voted on and all passed. Arlen informed the club the tournament entry forms are in. Dennis reported that AMF gave us a favorable rate and all other centers remained the same. Also, in the Tournament information from last month, a correction for the USBC Women’s Tournament and the USBC Queens and Senior Queens Tournament will be in Charlotte, NC and not Charleston. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 46 Buzzards at the gathering in February, two that didn’t bowl and two pacers. Our next scheduled gathering is on March 4th @ AMF West Houston Lanes 19936 Saums Rd. Katy (281) 578-9292. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: Full names are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure that the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign at the end of the three games. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $2.00 and be entered for the "THREE – IN – A- ROW" roll-off in January.

Sad Note: Our condolenses go out to the families of Albert Police who passed away on Jan. 31st and Pearl Cole (a life member since the 80’s) who passed away on Feb. 1st. Also, Chuck Amendt as he goes through chemotherapy. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

Note from Jackie:
Since we went up in price for the PACERS, it is necessary now for the word "pacer" to be shown on the money envelope by the $10.00 paid. We only take out money for the Buzzards prize fund each month and that could make a difference if it is not shown. Also, when you bring in a new member, please be sure all the information is complete on the form, including the membership number. Plus tell them that they need to pay dues & show their membership card at their first time to attend.

Several were upset with me about the membership cards. If I had seen your card before and had not marked it, sorry! There are times when some of you come up when I am busy with someone else and you just can’t wait to be helped. I do the best I can and if you have been a member for more than a year now, you should know the routine that each year from September thru January or February,I must see your new membership card. USBC national & local are quite strict about this. The Buzzard Club could have problems with USBC if I did not do this. Your card is good through September each year. Try to have more patience with me as I have to be with you. Thanks, Jackie

Note from Dennis:

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

Joke of the Month:
Two men went bear hunting. While one stayed in the cabin, the other went out looking for the bear. He soon found a huge one, shot at it, but only wounded it. The enraged bear charged toward him, and he started running for the cabin as fast as he could. He ran pretty fast, but the bear was just a little faster and gained on him with every step. Just as he reached the open cabin door, he tripped and fell flat. Too close behind to stop, the bear tripped over him and went rolling into the cabin. The man jumped up, closed the cabin door, and yelled to his friend inside, "You skin this one while I go and get another!"

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
A group of motorcyclists on a highway in Contra Costa County, Calif., said a man tried crashing into them while waving a pool cue. Two got off the highway to avoid him, but the man in the car followed and, when he got to where they were sitting, jumped out of his car, pool cue in hand, and started after them. They didn't have to do a thing to avoid attack: the man had left his car in gear and it ran him over. The bikers leapt to his rescue, pulling him out of the way so he wouldn't be hit again. Richard Brooks, 50, was charged with drunken driving and assault with a deadly weapon.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
In Inglewood, Calif. the driver of a big-wheeled "monster" truck avoided a drug arrest by driving over the police car.

INTERESTING FACT:
About 20 to 30 volcanoes erupt each year, mostly under the sea.

ON THIS DATE:
On March 4, 1930 - In competition sanctioned by the Women’s International Bowling Congress in Buffalo, New York, Emma Fahning became the first woman bowler to make a perfect score.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
"When [the housewife of 2000] cleans house she simply turns the hose on everything. Why not? Furniture-(upholstery included) rugs, draperies, unscratchable floors- all are made of synthetic fabric or waterproof plastic. After the water has run down a drain in the middle of the floor (later concealed by a rug of synthetic fiber) [she] turns on a blast of hot air and dries everything." - Waldemar Kaempfert, Popular Mechanics, 1950.
