"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards:

Well, I had another one of those Sundays. I just couldn’t get going and so I thought better than trying to bowl since I really wasn’t in the mood. Sorry guys, I’ll try not to do that too much in the future. There are a few new items I need to mention this month, one of which concerns a “special” tournament to be held at Diamond Lanes in Pasadena and information on the special olympics bowling. Check out the announcement page for more information on these and other upcoming events. If I leave out a birthday or anniversary or if the dates are wrong, please let me know so I can get that changed. That’s it for now, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting:

Arlen was not present again last month so Dennis had the honors of running the meeting. Barbara opened with the Treasuer’s report which passed. One new application was voted on and also passed. There was a correction made on the "Special Olympics Winter State Bowling Games" (which will follow later in the newsletter). Dennis noted that if you have not shown Jackie your 2002-2003 sanction cards, you need to do so ASAP. Bruce Koenig is still looking for volunteers and any ideas on a theme for our Annual Tournament to be held in 2005. Dennis mentioned there are scholarships available for high school seniors who bowl in the yourh league(YABA). The results of the 29th Annual HBA/HWBA Senior Citizen mixed tournament held Feb. 21-23 were announced and I’ll mention those on the announcement page also. Nothing else was brought up for discussion so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance:

We had 33 Buzzards at the gathering this month, 2 that did not bowl and 4 pacers. We had a great turn out last month and hopefully we can keep it up. Hope to see all of you this month on APRIL 6th @ AMF BUNKER HILL LANES 925 BUNKER HILL ROAD (713-461-1207). The meeting begins at 1PM and bowling begins AT 2 PM. Everyone must be signed up to bowl by 1:30. (In the event the meeting ends early we may start bowling a little early…so be signed up and ready). We are bowling 4 to a lane and if additional lanes are not available, Jackie will fill in additional bowlers. (REMEMBER TO PAY CASH ONLY FOR YOUR BOWLING AND BRACKETS, AS THIS IS HOW JACKIE AND DENNIS PAY OFF THE WINNERS.)

Trivia: On March 2, 1985, which professional bowler lost $1 million by only four pins on national TV?

Special Olympics Bowling: The local Special Olympics bowling organization is looking for volunteers to help with the Special Olympics Bowling Winter State Games to be held in Houston in the years 2004-2006. Volunteers must be willing to give up 4 days the last weekend of January in 2004, 2005 & 2006. Competition Directors are needed at the Bowling Centers used for this event. Need to complete training course in Special Olympic General Orientation (4 hrs) and Competition Director’s Training (8 hrs plus 10 hr followup). This training should be completed in 2003. For more info contact Brian or Patty Koehler at 281-879-6610(h) or 281-552-3396(Brian’s work).

Annual Tournament Information: The applications for the tournament to be held in San Antonio on August 8 thru 10 are now available. You can get yours at the next gathering in April. An envelope with maps, tournament news, hotels etc. will be given with each application. All team captains must have someone pick up one for them if they are not able to attend in April. Reminder: you are to have bowled a total of 9 games between August of 2002 and June of 2003 to qualify to bowl in the tournament. If you are not sure if you qualify, Jackie will have a list of those with less than 9 games current. The nine games need to bowled before the June gathering.

Bowling Note: Diamond Lanes in Pasadena will be hosting a “Special” Tournament where PBA pros will bowl with local Special Olympics Olympians on Saturday 4/12. There will be a raffle drawing for many prizes. First Place will be a new Ford P/U or $13,000.00. If anyone is interested, contact Jimmy Young at Diamond Lanes, 6327 Spencer Hwy. in Pasadena, 281-487-7327.

Bowling Note II: The 29th Annual HBA/HWBA Senior Citizen Mixed Tournament concluded the weekend of Feb. 21-23 at AMF West Houston in Katy with one Buzzard placing in her Average Division. Congradulations to Muriel Fry who finished 2nd in Singles & All-Events.

Joke of the Month:
Seems this Arkansas guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinderblock through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinderblock and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinderblock bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. Seems the liquor store window was made of Plexiglas. The whole event was caught on videotape.
