HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
JUNE 2007 VOLUME 46 ISSUE 6

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"
Hello Fellow Buzzards: As everyone should know by now, our annual bowling tournament is coming up in August and we need to get on the ball and get the applications finished and turned in by June 15th which is the deadline. I decided to drop the page concerning the tournament from the newsletters since everyone should have gotten all the info by now. If you still need a copy check with Dennis and he will get you one. A list of needed members to complete teams or double/singles partners for the tournament is on the announcements page. I started something new this month that I hope you might like. Get your thinking caps on and try to solve the “Who Could It Be” quiz without looking at the answer on the announcement page. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report which passed. Three new member applications were voted on and all passed. Arlen went over the tournament entry forms and told the club to get the forms finished and turn them ASAP in order to get the times requested. Dennis went over some tournaments which are listed later in the newsletter. The club discussed the possibility of getting new shirts and Dennis said the representative will be at the meeting in June, at which time the club can address any issues that may arise. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 68 Buzzards at the gathering in May, five that did not bowl and one pacer. Our next scheduled gathering is on June 3rd @ Del Mar Lanes 3020 Mangum Houston (713) 682-2506. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: Full names are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure that the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign at the end of the three games. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for the “THREE – IN – A- ROW “roll-off in January.

DID YOU KNOW?
There are more living organisms on the skin of a single human being than there are human beings on the surface of the earth.

Who Could It Be?
He graduated medical school and went to work on the frontier of Arizona. After 11 years, he left the frontier to specialize in the field of bacteriology. He led a commission in Havana, Cuba, to investigate an outbreak of yellow fever in the American troops stationed there in 1900. The team figured out that a certain type of mosquito was the cause and in a few years, the disease was virtually gone. Two years later he died of appendicitis. A hospital in Washington, D.C. is named for him. Who Could It Be?

Note from Jackie:
There are still many that have not shown their 2006 – 2007 sanction cards. I have a list of names of those needing to do this. If you can't attend a meeting to do so, either mail a copy or fax it to me. My address & fax number are both on the news-letter. The June meeting is the time all tournament applications and money need to be turned in. Those not sure if they have the required number of games, I have a list where you sign up for bowling. If your name is not on it, you have the nine already. June is the last month to qualify with the nine games. Thanks for your co-operation, Jackie.

Benefit for Chuck Amendt

This is an update on Chuck Amendt’s benefit and on his cancer treatment. As you may recall from the information in our previous newsletters, Chuck has been diagnosed with stage 3 bladders and prostrate cancer and a benefit was held at Sweetwater Country Club on Monday, April 23.

Many attended the Luncheon Benefit and many participated in the “Swinging for a Cause” Golf-A-Thon Benefit. These two benefits raised nearly $12,000 and will provide a financial source for Chuck’s medical expenses not covered or approved by his medical network and will be administered by Helping Hands Ministries, Inc. through the Amendt Family Fund. For more information, you can visit www.miraclegolfconcepts.com or you can contact Andrea Brown at 214-909-7844.

The raffle ticket drive for a $1000 Visa Debit Card raised $4460 and was won by a lady who lives ourt of town. A Storm bowling ball was donated by Mike Holland, owner of Del Mar Lanes, and a free 30 minute instructional session was offered by Carol Norman and Donna Conners of U Can Bowl 2. Also, four other winners received a free entry into the Luci Bonneau Memorial Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles Pro-Am July 27 & 28 at Dynamic Lanes. This ball raffle raised $1612 and all the winners were Del Mar league bowlers. A speical thank you goes out to Mike, Carol & Donna for their donations and their time and to all the Del Mar bowlers.

The monies raised from the Visa Debit Card and the ball raffle were presented to Chuck and Linda at the luncheon. For more information about a direct contribution, contact Dara Brown at 832-651-7136. All donations by individuals or by business’ are tax deductible.

Chuck’s aggressive chemotherapy treatment to battle his disease is just that – aggressive! He has had some set backs, but overall his spirits are good.

Please keep Chuck and Linda in your thoughts and prayers.

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

Joke of the Month:
There once was a blind man who decided to visit Texas. When he arrived on the plane, he felt the seats and said, "Wow, these seats are big!" The person next to him answered, "Everything is big in Texas." When he finally arrived in Texas, he decided to visit a bar. Upon arriving in the bar, he ordered a beer and got a mug placed between his hands. He exclaimed, "Wow these mugs are big!" The bartender replied, "Everything is big in Texas." After a couple of beers, the blind man asked the bartender where the bathroom was located. The bartender replied, "Second door to the right." The blind man headed for the bathroom, but accidentally tripped over and skipped the second door. Instead, he entered the third door, which lead to the swimming pool and fell into the pool by accident. Scared to death, the blind man started shouting, "Don't flush, don't flush!"

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
The town of Palm Beach, Fla., is getting a Starbucks coffee house, despite opposition by some of the more snooty homeowners. The store was approved, but an emergency council moratorium quickly followed to keep out any other "formula" restaurants until they can be permanently outlawed. "Nine thousand people live here in magnificent homes with [servants]," said one resident. "Do you think they're going to send their help down to Starbucks?"

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
"For several months, our nurses have been baffled to find a dead patient in the same bed every Friday morning" a spokeswoman for the Pelonomi Hospital (Free State, South Africa) told reporters. "There was no apparent cause for any of the deaths and extensive checks on the air conditioning system and a search for possible bacterial infection failed to reveal any clues." "However, further inquiries have now revealed the cause of these deaths". It seems that every Friday morning a cleaner would enter the ward, remove the plug that powered the patient’s life support system; plug her floor polisher into the vacant socket, then go about her business. When she had finished her chores, she would plug the life support machine back in and leave, unaware that the patient was now dead. She could not, after all, hear the screams and eventual death rattle over the whirring of her polisher.

MORONS
At a convenience store in Farmington, PA., a man bought a pack of cigarettes and then, once the cash drawer was open, demanded all the money inside, He was arrested when he refused to leave until he also got the correct change for his cigarettes.

ON THIS DATE:
On June 3, 1965 - Edward H. White became the first US astronaut to walk in space. He spent more than 30 minutes outside spacecraft Gemini-IV. The craft, launched the same day as the walk, had only two crew members: White and Commander James A. McDivitt. Gemini-IV's flight lasted for four days.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
"That any general system of conveying passengers would…go at a velocity exceeding ten miles an hour, or thereabouts, is extremely improbable." Thomas Tredgold, British railroad designer, Practical Treatise on Railroads and Carriages, 1835.
