HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
Febuary 2007 VOLUME 46 ISSUE 2

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: I tried something new this month and I would like your feedback. I have combined the bowling schedule for this year along with the officers and area directors all on the same page. The writing is a little smaller but I needed to do this to make it fit. I think it will be okay but I will let ya’ll decide. Don’t forget to show Jackie your sanction cards again this month if you haven’t already done so. This will be the last month that you can do this. Also, dues should have been paid already, but if you haven’t paid, check with Barbara ASAP. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report which passed. One new member application was voted on and also passed. Arlen informed the club there was no news on the tournament in Dallas but that he would let us know somethng as soon as possible. Arlen gave out the trophies for the Queen and King Buzzards of 2006 to Martha Warnken and Richard Taylor. Pete Harvey and Bruce Koenig volunteered to get our web site updated and to keep it current. Dennis informed the club he was still working with AMF on the cost of bowling and he mentioned upcoming tournaments that are listed later in the newsletter. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 62 Buzzards at the gathering in January, five that didn’t bowl and no pacers. Our next scheduled gathering is on February 11th @ AMF Diamond Lanes 267 N. Forest Blvd. Houston (281) 440-9166. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: Full names are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure that the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign at the end of the three games. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $2.00 and be entered for the "THREE – IN – A- ROW" roll-off in January. Also, January is the last month for all members, including new members, to show Jackie your sanction card for 2006-2007.

Sad Note: Our Condolences go out to Randy Stahl whose mother passed away on Dec. 19th and Terrance Castellese whose son passed away on Jan. 15th. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

Note from Jackie:
There are still many that have not shown their membership card (previously called a Sanction card) to me. There were three people that would have won in our pay offs if they had taken the time to show it to me last meeting. You were there but did not show the card to me. There will be a list at our next few meets of those that need to “show me your card!” I am the tournament manager and rules are rules. At any other tournament you would have had to do the same. Your cooperation as soon as possible would greatly be appreciated. It gets old having to remind you so many times and still no response. Jackie

Note from Dennis:
Congratulations to Wayne Harvey for his first 700 series, a 724 for 190 pins over his series average.

Note from Arlen:
Our Annual Tournament for 2007 will be hosted by the Dallas Chapter. Entry forms and hotel / banquet info will come in soon. Start now getting your teams ready. Jackie will have a list of the members who still need to have their 9 games bowled by our June meeting. Let’s have a good turnout in Dallas.

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

Joke of the Month:
A blind man with a seeing eye dog at his side walks into a grocery store. The man walks to the middle of the store, picks up the dog by the tail, and starts swinging the dog around in circles over his head. The store manager, who has seen all this, thinks this is quite strange. So, he decides to find out what's going on. The store manager approaches the blind man swinging the dog and says, "Pardon me. May I help you with something?" The blind man says, "No thanks. I'm just looking around."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
When an entire safe was stolen from a gym in Florence, Ky., police had an easy time finding the culprits. Jennifer L. Perriman, 21, an employee at the gym, and Stacey N. True, also 21, stopped by at 12:30 a.m. but were surprised to find a cleaning crew inside. Perriman asked when they would be leaving, but apparently got tired of waiting. "That's when they asked if the crew could help them put the safe in their car," a police investigator said. The cleaners agreed to help, but left a note for management which included Perriman's license plate number in case it wasn't allowed. When officers got to her house, "there were drag marks along the sidewalk and bits of broken concrete where they'd bounced the safe off the steps." Perriman and her accomplice were arrested and confessed to burglary. The safe was recovered -- still locked, since the women apparently had no clue how to open it.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
A judge in Radnor, Pa., admonished police for pretending a Xerox copy machine was a lie detector, placing a metal colander on the head of a suspect, attaching it to the copier with fake wires and pressing "START" on the copier each time the suspect answered a question so a paper would emerge with- "HE'S LYING"- printed across it.

INTERESTING FACT:
When snakes are born with two heads, they fight each other for food.

ON THIS DATE:
On February 11, 1573 - English explorer Francis Drake first saw the Pacific Ocean.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
"Flight by machines heavier than air is unpractical, and insignificant, if not utterly impossible."
- Astronomer Simon Newcomb, 1902.

The following is an ad from a real-life newspaper which appeared four days in a row - the last three hopelessly trying to correct the first day's mistake.

MONDAY:
For sale: R.D. Jones has one sewing machine for sale. Phone 948-0707 after 7 P.M. and ask for Mrs. Kelly who lives with him cheap.

TUESDAY Notice:
We regret having erred. In R.D. Jones' ad yesterday. It should have read "One sewing machine for sale cheap. Phone 948-0707 and ask for Mrs. Kelly, who lives with him after 7 P.M."

WEDNESDAY Notice:
R.D. Jones has informed us that he has received several annoying telephone calls because of the error we made in the classified ad yesterday. The ad stands corrected as follows: "For sale R.D. Jones has one sewing machine for sale. Cheap. Phone 948-0707 after 7 P.M. and ask for Mrs. Kelly who loves with him."

THURSDAY Notice:
I, R.D. Jones, have no sewing machine for sale. I smashed it. Don't call 948-0707 as I have had the phone disconnected. I have not been carrying on with Mrs. Kelly. Until yesterday she was my housekeeper but she quit!
