FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: It has come to my attention that there are a few of you that have not paid your dues for 2006. Just a friendly reminder that those members, who have not paid by the February gathering, will not receive a newsletter. Also, there are a few of you who have not shown Jackie your Sanction card. Please show them this month or the same will apply to those people. Concerning the February gathering, it has been moved due to a prior commitment by Del Mar. It will now be held on the 12th of February instead of the 5th. That’s it for now, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report which passed. Two new member applications were voted on and also passed. Arlen asked for a clarification on when the bowling year actually ends, whether it was at the December gathering or Dec 31st and the club decided it was actually on Dec. 31st. It was brought up to clarify our decision on how we are going to do Christmas bowling. After some discussion, it was decided that we would only bowl once in December with both party and regular bowling. The club also decided that any money left over will be returned to the tournament fund. The 9 game rule was voted on to be left in place as is, but any exceptions to the rule would be voted on by the members attending the meeting in June before the tournament deadline. Arlen gave out the trophies for the Queen and King Buzzards of 2005 to Martha Warnken and Ray Wright. Dennis informed the club of the Special Olympics Bowling that will take place on the last weekend in February at Copperfield and AMF Willow. If anyone is interested in helping, please contact one of the bowling establishments. He also presented Larry Keeton an award for the 288 game he bowled late last year. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 60 Buzzards at the gathering in January, five that didn’t bowl and 2 pacers. Our next scheduled gathering is on FEBRUARY 12th @ DEL MAR LANES 3020 MANGUM (713-682-2506). The meeting begins at 1PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: Full names are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure that the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign at the end of the three games. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for the “THREE – IN – A- ROW “roll-off in January. Also, January is the last month for all members, including new members, to show Jackie your sanction card for 2005-2006.

Sad News: Our condolenses go out to the family of Jack Harper Jr., President of the HBA, who passed away on Christmas. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Good News: After having back surgery, Lenoard Ferguson, Sr. is bowling again. Congratulations Lenoard, and welcome back!!!!

Sanction Card Reminders: As was stated in the last few newsletters, those that have not shown their 2005–2006 Sanction cards to Jackie by the January meet would not be qualified to win in the pay-offs. Rules that USBC require, is that a member is not considered in good standing if dues are not paid nor Sanction cards are not shown to verify they are paid for. Each month she is required to send names of all the winners. Each year she has to keep asking that members show their cards to her. Our Buzzard Club sanction begins in January each year. If she doesn’t have your co-operation as asked for, she has no choice but to deny your winning in pay-offs. February will definitely be the last time to show your card.

FUNNY PAGES AND INTERESTING FACTS

Joke of the Month: A young executive was leaving the office at 6 pm when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in hand.” Listen," said the CEO, "this is important, and my secretary has left. Can you make this thing work? “Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button. “Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine. "I just need one copy."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
Charles D. McKinley, 25, of Brooklyn, N.Y., had four weeks of vacation coming, so he decided to visit his parents in DeSoto, Texas. Rather than buy a plane ticket for $320, McKinley, a shipping clerk, packed himself into a shipping crate and air-expressed himself home, charging the fees to his employer. When the crate was delivered to his parents' front step, McKinley pushed out of the box and shook hands with the "shaken and frightened" delivery driver. The driver called the police. After an investigation by the FBI, the U.S. attorney, postal inspectors, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration, McKinley was charged as a stowaway, a federal misdemeanor.

BAD PREDICTIONS:
"The man of A.D. 2000 is sitting in his study. At his elbow is a pot of synthetic coffee, in his fingers a letter delivered by rocket. Outside the sun is shining brightly, the result of climate control. In the background, a radio plays exotic music from a distant land, relayed by a space satellite."
- Newsweek, Sept. 28, 1959.

WEIRD BUT TRUE
US Park Ranger Roy C. Sullivan from Virginia holds the record for the person most times struck by lightning - and living to tell the tale. Between 1942 and 1983, Roy has the dubious distinction of being struck by lightning seven times. He was known as the Human Lightning Rod.
