BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA
HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
AUGUST 2007 VOLUME 46 ISSUE 7

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: I don’t have a whole lot to say this month except I’m beginning to wonder if I should try to find an ark somewhere. With all this rain and the hot days, it’s getting a little too humid for me. Oh well, that’s Houston for ya. Speaking of hot, the tournament is upon us and that is where we need to turn up the heat with high scores and higher series. As always, let’s have fun and enjoy the company the tournament brings. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report which passed. Three new member applications were voted on and passed. Arlen informed the club that we have received the confirmations from Dallas and everyone got the times they requested. Arlen also told the club that the Dinner/Dance will be held at South Fork Ranch and not at the hotel. There will be shuttle buses to and from the dance so everyone should be able to attend that wants to. If anyone has a problem with either the tournament or the shuttle buses, contact Arlen at 832-368-7999. Dennis informed the club that the new shirts are on order and everyone will be contacted when they arrive or they can pick them up in Dallas. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 47 Buzzards at the gathering in July, two that did not bowl and one pacer. Our next scheduled gathering is on August 12th @ Armadilla II Lanes 10055 Fuqua Houston (713) 944-7100. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: Full names are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure that the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign at the end of the three games. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for the “THREE – IN – A- ROW “roll-off in January. Don’t forget, if you show up to bowl in your birthday month, you only pay $5.

DID YOU KNOW?
During the American Revolution, more inhabitants of the American colonies fought for the British than for the Continental Army.

Who Could It Be?
When he wasn’t milking cows or doing various other farms chores, he was playing store with his brother. After working in dry goods stores in New York and Pennsylvania, he opened his own store believing that cheaper priced items could be profitable if enough were sold and if customers were allowed to handle the merchandise. He had 1,000 “five-and-ten-cent” stores by 1911, and two years later he built the world’s tallest building in New York for his corporate offices. Until recently, his stores were part of most American landscapes.

WATCH OUT DALLAS,
HERE WE COME!!!!!

Here we come.

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

Joke of the Month:
A couple was invited to a swanky masked Halloween Party. She got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the party alone. He, being a devoted husband, protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed and there was no need of his good time being spoiled by not going. So he took his costume and away he went. The wife, after sleeping soundly for one hour, awakened without pain, and as it was still early, she decided to go to the party. In as much as her husband did not know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him. She joined the party and soon spotted her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice chick he could and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there. His wife went up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he left his partner high and dry and devoted his time to the new stuff that had just arrived. She let him go as far as he wished; naturally, since he was her husband. Finally he whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed, so off they went to one of the cars and had a little bang. Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away and went home and put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what kind of explanation he would make for his behaviour. She was sitting up reading when he came in and asked what kind of a time he had had. He said, "Oh the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you're not there." Then she asked, "Did you dance much?" He replied, "I'll tell you, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the den and played poker all evening. But I'll tell you... The guy I loaned my costume to sure had a real good time!"

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
Accountant Doug Milliken ran for Arapahoe County (Colo.) Treasurer on a platform of "empower[ing] families to save their home when faced with foreclosure," and bragged that he has master's degrees in both accounting and financial management. But the day before winning the election, Milliken's mortgage company foreclosed on his house for "failure to make timely payments" and is selling the house at auction the day before he is sworn in.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
A medical student doing a rotation in toxicology at the poison control center, received a call from this woman who was very upset because she caught her little daughter eating ants. The medical student quickly reassured her that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her daughter into the hospital. She calmed down, and at the end of the conversation happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant poison to eat in order to kill the ants. The medical student told her that she better bring her daughter in to the Emergency room right away.

MORONS
Police in Oakland, California spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself inside his home. After firing ten Tear gas canisters, officers discovered that the man was standing beside them, shouting pleas to come out and give himself up...

ON THIS DATE:
On August 12, 1877 - Thomas A. Edison completeed his first design for the phonograph. Along with directions on how to construct it, Edison gave the model of his invention to John Kreusi. Kreusi bet the inventor $2 and saying there was no way the machine would work. He lost.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
In the 1941 book The Story of Everyday Things, author Arthur Train Jr. explained how a businessman would travel in 2000: "He will not be obliged to handle the controls by himself. He may well be able to doze or read, while, from a distant point, his car or plane will be held on its course by short-wave impulses."
