BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA
HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
APRIL 2007 VOLUME 46 ISSUE 4

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: Not a whole lot of stuff happening this month but I do want to remind you again that our annual bowling tournament is coming up soon and we need to get teams together so now would be a good time to start. I listed information concerning the tournament on a separate page after the announcements again this month and will continue to list it until the tournament is over. There is more concerning the benefit for Chuck Amendt also included after the announcements. Dennis found a large pair of sunglasses at our January gathering and someone left a long sleeve shirt behind the check-in last month. Contact him or Jackie if you think they may be yours. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report, which passed. Five new member applications were voted on and all passed. Arlen went over the tournament entry forms and then mentioned to the club the problems that Jackie is having with members not showing their sanction cards. He said that with Jackie being busy getting the members lane assignments she sometimes will not have time to look at the card. Please be patient and wait until she is finished with what she is doing and then proceed to show her your card. We don’t want to have to show the card at each gathering so please let’s get this straightened out. Dennis gave the club an update on Chuck Amendt and the club voted to donate $100 to help with his cause. Arlen informed the club that I will be in charge again this year (as usual, ha ha) to help with placing members on teams or helping find doubles/singles partners for the tournament. A list of needed members is on the announcements page. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 52 Buzzards at the gathering in February, two that did not bowl and one pacer. Our next scheduled gathering is on April 1st @ AMF Bunker Hill Lanes 925 Bunker Hill Houston (713) 461-1207. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: Full names are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure that the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign at the end of the three games. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for the "THREE – IN – A - ROW" roll-off in January.

Note from Jackie:
Please, whoever totals the re-cap sheets, be sure you are adding correctly. In March, there were two members that had a total of around 100 over the actual amount bowled. Also, be sure that the word pacer is written by the name & amount paid on the money envelope.
There are still a few members that have not shown their 2006 – 2007 membership cards to me. All new members coming in need to do this at their first meeting they come to as well as pay dues. Your help on this would be greatly appreciated. Also, since we went up in price for the PACERS, it is necessary now for the word “pacer” to be shown on the money envelope by the $10.00 paid. We only take out money for the Buzzards prize fund each month and that could make a difference if it is not shown. When you bring in a new member, please be sure all the information is complete on the form, including the membership number. Plus tell them that they need to pay dues & show their membership card at their first time to attend. Several were upset with me about the membership cards. If I had seen your card before and had not marked it, sorry! There are times when some of you come up when I am busy with someone else and you just can’t wait to be helped. I do the best I can and if you have been a member for more than a year now, you should know the routine that each year from September thru January or February; I must see your new membership card. USBC national & local are quite strict about this. The Buzzard Club could have problems with USBC if I did not do this. Your card is good through September each year. Try to have more patience with me as I have to be with more patience with me, as I have to be with you.
Thanks, Jackie

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

Joke of the Month:
I was in Wal-Mart buying a large bag of Purina for my dogs and was in line to check out. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog...Duh! I was feeling a bit crabby so on impulse, I told her no, I was starting The Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I'd ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care unit with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IV's in both arms. Her eyes about bugged out of her head. I went on and on with the bogus diet story and she was totally buying it. I told her that it was an easy, inexpensive diet and that the way it works is to load your pockets or purse with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The package said the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story, particularly a tall guy behind her. Horrified, she asked if something in the dog food had poisoned me and was that why I ended up in the hospital. I said no..... I’d been sitting in the street licking my butt when a car hit me. I thought the tall guy was going to have to be carried out the door.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
Craig Moore, 28, was driving in Manchester, England, when he was flashed by a speed camera. Afraid he would get a speeding ticket, which could push him over the limit of points on his license and trigger a driving ban, which would cost him his job, he returned with explosives and destroyed the camera in an attempt to destroy the evidence. But because he didn't wreck the recording device in the base, the camera got evidence of him setting up the charge, which caused 11,700 pounds (US$22,000) in damage. Moore was sentenced to four months in jail, but wasn't banned from driving: the camera was just a warning device that tried to get motorists to slow down by flashing them, rather than one used to send out traffic citations. And even if it was, judges rarely will issue a driving ban if it means the defendant will lose his job. But based on his admission of guilt, Moore's boss demanded he resign.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
A tech was in training getting ready to do tech support for Compaq computers when his boss/trainer told him about a phone call received by tech support when she was in Houston. A lady bought a Compaq computer at a local retailer. The same day she called the retailer to complain that the machine came with a dead mouse. The retailer put the lady on hold to call Compaq to see if the mouse could be replaced. While playing the middleman between the customer and tech support, he found out that the lady did not want a new mouse. Upon further investigation, the salesperson learned that somehow, a mouse (the living, furry kind) had crawled into the box and died.

INTERESTING FACT:
When an octopus becomes upset, it may eat itself.

ON THIS DATE:
On April 1, 1760 - "The Poor Robin's Almanack" published one of the first celebrations of April Fools' Day. Some believe April Fools' started independently in different countries to celebrate the Spring Equinox. Others say it celebrated New Year's Day, which fell on April 1st in the Julian calendar.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
"Schools will be open 12 months a year [by 1982]. Courses will be speeded up; instead of a four-year high school education, three-year plans may be in effect. Another variation will be staggered semesters-some students studying while others are vacationing." - Changing Times Magazine, 1957.
