APRIL 2004 VOLUME XXXXIII ISSUE 4
Hello Fellow Buzzards: Well, I had another one of those Sundays. My son and his family came in from out of town and since I haven’t seen them in a while, I thought I would spend some time with them. Sorry guys, I’ll try not to do that too much in the future. There are a few new items I need to mention this month, one of which concerns the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the other is the 30th Annual Houston Senior Mixed Tournament. Check out the announcement page for more information on these. The copy of the plaque presented to the Houston Bowling Hall of Fame did not come out like I had hoped but I think it turned out ok. Hopefully you will too. If I leave out a birthday or anniversary or if the dates are wrong, please let me know so I can get that changed. That’s it for now, so on with bowling!!!
Minutes of Meeting:
Arlen opened the meeting and Barbara presented the Treasurer’s report which passed. Five new applications were voted on and also passed. Arlen mentioned to the members that the tournament entry forms from Tyler have not be received yet (he did call me the following night and informed me they had just arrived by mail that day). Dennis reported on a PBA Southwest Region Tournament to be held March 12-14 at Copperfield Bowl with a Pro/Am on Friday, March 12. Proceeds from donations, sponsorships and advertising will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (more on this to follow in the newsletter). Dennis also reported on Buzzard members who placed in the 30th Annual Houston Senior Mixed Tournament (more to follow in the newsletter). Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.
Attendance: We had 49 Buzzards at the gathering in March, 2 that did not bowl and 1 pacer. We have had good turn outs in the last few months and hopefully we can keep it up. Hope to see all of you on APRIL 4TH @ AMF BUNKER HILL LANES 925 BUNKER HILL ROAD (713-461-1207). The meeting begins at 1PM and bowling begins AT 2 PM. Everyone must be signed up to bowl by 1:30. We are bowling 4 to a lane and if additional lanes are not available, Jackie will fill in additional bowlers. (REMEMBER TO PAY CASH ONLY FOR YOUR BOWLING AND BRACKETS, AS THIS IS HOW JACKIE AND DENNIS PAY OFF THE WINNERS.)
Trivia: What are the most fouls committed in one league game by an individual?

BOWLING RESULTS Bowling Note II: Dennis brought a plaque that is on display at the Houston Bowling Association that was presented to the Houston Bowling Hall Of Fame by Thomas E. Walters, Jr. Arlen read the inscription and for those members who were not at the meeting, here it is published for your enjoyment. It is not only a part of the history of The Buzzard Club of America, it also shows the humor of its founder and the Clubs motto.Payouts, Brackets & High Games / Series

Message from Dennis: There was an incident last month at Meadowcreek Lanes that needs to be addressed, again, to our members and any guest that may bowl with us at our Monthly Gatherings. If you or a guest has a complaint about the bowling center or with the staff, you go to a Buzzard Club officer and tell them your concerns and they in turn will discuss this with the bowling center. This is the same policy the Houston Buzzard Club has when we go to our Annual Tournament each year. Your Buzzard Club officers are in constant contact with the bowling centers for the availability of dates, accommodations at the center, lineage, any specials on food/drink and any other type of “specials” they may provide the Buzzard Club. Although managers may change at the centers, the centers and the managers know the Buzzard Club officers and the officers know these managers. The officers can best resolve the problem. So please, let your officers do what you elected them to do. Members should be aware of Article IV – Board of Directors - Section 2 – Constitution and Bylaws – Buzzard Club of America – Houston Chapter: “The Board shall decide on any dispute or protest and it is within its power to discipline any member for violating any provisions of the Constitution and Bylaws, or for conduct derogatory to the best interest of the Club. It shall also have authority to expel and/or reinstate any member for good and sufficient reason.” Quote from Arlen: The Special Olympics Bowling Winter State Games were held the weekend of February 6-8 at Copperfield Bowl, AMF Windfern Lanes and AMF Willow Lanes. There were 2550 bowlers that participated in this event with a lot of laughter, smiles and tears of joy. Organizers hope to have this event a week or two earlier in 2005. Volunteers will be required to complete approximately 4 hours of General Orientation training and Competition Directors training of 8 hours plus 10 hours of follow up. Training classes may be here locally or volunteers may be sent to other locations at Special Olympics expense. For more information, you can contact Brian Koehler at 832-275-5040(cell) or 281-552-3396(work). The Local Area Special Olympics bowling will be one weekend in November at Copperfield Bowl and AMF Willow Lanes.
Special Olympics Bowling: “I have said over & over again that we have the best people around and this club is like a family. I have said countless times that if you have a problem at any bowling center please come to me or an officer and 99 times out of a hundred we can handle the problem. I have asked that no member complain to the bowling staff. I don’t know what I have to do to get this across. We have a good standing with all the centers in Houston and I don’t think it is fair that any member, just because they got upset, tarnish our reputation. I will not tolerate any member causing any problems at any center before, during or after bowling while they are representing the Houston Chapter of the Buzzard Club of America. If anyone has a problem with this, please see me and convince me that the actions were upholding to the good name that we have earned.”
Annual Tournament Information: Just a few reminders concerning the upcoming tournament in Tyler. Arlen said that if any members have a problem to contact either him or Jackie. Be sure that when you schedule a date and time to bowl that all people involved are aware of the schedule. Make all printing legible and make sure you have the 1st & 2nd choice to bowl in the correct order. Tyler is going to charter a bus for $10 per person to go to Louisiana on Thursday 8/12 scheduled to leave Tyler at 5 pm and leave Louisiana later that night at 11pm to return. A deli dinner and free gift are included.
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: The Southwest Region of the PBA is a seven-state area including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kansas, New Mexico and Colorado. They have already included Pasadena as one of their annual events and are hoping to add Houston to their regional calendar

The Ten Commandments of Fun Bowling
I. Thy shall not brag nor complain about thy bowling to another as he probably would rather tell of his own. II. Thou shall avoid from crying or spitting on the approaches as it makes sliding more difficult. III. Thy shall not loft the ball upon the lane as it tends to wake up the scorekeeper. IV. Thou shall refrain from cussing or kicking the ball return after having a “split”. V. Thy shall not point thy middle finger toward the “10” pin. VI. Thy shall not call the pins by any other name than their respective numbers. VII. Thou shall concentrate upon thy game and not upon the Game thy would rather bowl. VIII. Thy shall not blame “low scores” on the lanes condition. IX. Thy shall not ridicule others about their style of delivery. X. Thou shall always have a smile on thy face when leaving the bowling lanes.Tom “big chief” Walters
