BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA
HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
JANUARY 2008 VOLUME 47 ISSUE 1

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: I hope everyone has a safe and prosperous new year. I don’t have the new bowling schedule for next year yet, but we bowl at Copperfield this month and the rest of the schedule will be in next month’s newsletter. Please disregard the schedule in this newsletter. Don’t forget to show Jackie your sanction cards again this month if you haven’t already done so. Also, dues are to be paid starting this month. Don’t forget, the three-in-a-row roll off will be held at our January gathering. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report which passed. Three new member applications were voted on and also passed. Annual dues for 2008 are to be paid in January. All sanction/membership cards should be shown to Jackie in January. Election of Officers for 2008 was presented, voted on, and all were elected. The rule proposal was presented, voted on, and was approved. Arlen thanked the members who brought a child’s gift. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 74 Buzzards at the gathering in December, five that did not bowl and no pacers. Our next scheduled gathering is on January 6th @ Copperfield Bowl 15615 Glen Chase Dr. Houston (281) 550-8710. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: There are only two balls per lane during warm-up and not 10 minutes. First and last names of bowlers are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign the sheet at the end of bowling. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for “THE ELLIE DEASON MEMORIAL THREE – IN – A- ROW “roll-off in January. Don’t forget, if you show up to bowl in your birthday month, you pay only $5.

Stupid State Laws
In Castaic Calif. - the law states that if a dentist accidentally pulls the wrong tooth, then the patient has the right to pull one of the dentist's teeth.

Who Could It Be?
A rare look at the world under the seas was given to millions of television viewers thanks to his TV specials and films. A former French naval officer in World War II, he designed the aqualung, which allowed divers to stay under water longer. He won two Academy Awards for his documentaries. Up until his death in 1997, he continued to explore the waters on his ship the Calypso.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
Here we come.

Bowling Note: The United States Postal Service has come out with a bowling stamp. If interested, you can go online at www.bpaa.com or www.gobowling.com. You can also order by fax at 1-817-633-2940.

Sad Note: Jo Roznovsky, affectionally known as Mama Jo, the cook at Del Mar Lanes, has been diagnosed with Lymphoma. For any donations you can contact Diana Roznovsky (713-582-041), Sandi Maher (832-877-8982) or Sharon Michna (713-851-2317)

Special Note for All Members: The Houston Buzzard Club is for the members and all members should have a voice in all that goes on within the club. When the meeting has started it is very beneficial for all members to be in attendance so that everything that is said is understood by everyone and not relayed to people that are visiting by the lanes. A lot of members will hear second-hand information that may be missing an important point and then they start to complain or don’t understand why it was even discussed. If a member chooses to not attend the meeting, then that member should not complain of a decision or about anything else that was discussed at the meeting.

Applications: Whenever a new application is filled out, please be sure to make it ledgeable. There are a few times when I can’t make out the address which delays the member getting it if it goes to the wrong address. Also, complete ALL the information on the application and provide the signature where required. Your help in this will be greatly appreciated.

Price Increase: The price to bowl at our gatherings may increase in 2008. I will pass on that information as soon as I have it.

Note From Jackie:
MEMBERSHIP CARDS MUST BE SHOWN at the January meeting. To keep the BUZZARD CLUB sanctioned, I must see your 2007 - 2008 card no later than January 2008. You will not qualify for any money for high games or for the most splits beginning in January. So, for both our sakes, PLEASE SHOW ME YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD WHEN YOU SIGN IN. Many members in December chose not to show me their card. Also, it has been mentioned many times, DO NOT SIGN ANYONE TO BOWL UNLESS THEY ARE IN THE HOUSE. There were several no shows in December. Also, only 4 bowlers per lane unless told otherwise. Your co-operation will be appreciated.

Mailing Addresses: Any member who would like to receive the Newsletter by E-mail, or have any other changes, contact Ken at BUZZARDNEWS@COMCAST.NETor see me during our monthly gathering.

Newsletter Printing: Printing and copies of this newsletter are donated by: Stephens Office Supply. For your home or office business needs, contact Georgiann Rullo at 713-680-1616 or e-mail her at georgiann.rullo@stephensofficesupply.com

Three-in-a-row roll off: The 2007 Ellie Deason Memorial Three - in - a - row roll off will be at the January meeting. Bowl as usual. Splits will be counted as usual and with them also being counted for those that re-qualified during 2007. We haven’t had this many that re-qualified in several years. Those competing for the roll - off are: Terry Blue, Glory Brown, Roger Moon, John Johnson, Alice Ward, Deanna Owens, Bert & Martha Warnken, Wayne Harvey, Bob Van, John Rugg, Sr., Dottie Rollfing, Dana Fernandez, Wayne Bryce, Veronica Scrimshaw, Dave Fletcher, Carolyn Cook, Patricia Jameson & Rosie Nacey.

E-Mail Update: With the cost of postage going up, I would like to start sending the newsletter by e-mail to more members. I realize the biggest concern to members is that other people will see their e-mail addresses. I can assure you that this will not happen since I a send the newsletter to myself and do a “blind copy” to the recipients so that nobody can see who else receives it. Please think about it and let me know.

Shirt Update: The representative Donna has been in contact with was unable to attend our November gathering. Likewise, the representative Dennis has been in contact with also was not present but did send samples of the ladies sizes. A discussion was had about what style of the buzzard head shoud be used on the shirts. The members agreed to have the different buzzard head designs printed out on paper and brought before the membership for a vote. As said by Arlen at our October gathering and printed in our November newsletter, any and all problems concerning the shirts will be corrected and he asked for your patience until this is resolved. Anyone that has a problem with the shirts that doesn’t think can be resolved easily, please contact Arlen and only Arlen.

200 Club Results: There were 57 members (11 women & 46 men) that bowled 200 games this past year. Dave Davis & Marty Neff bowled fifteen 200 games each with Marty bowling the highest at 285. Anita Garcia & Barbara Castellese led the women with three 200 games each and Barbara had the highest game of 221.

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

JOKE OF THE MONTH:
A petty thief, a teacher and a lawyer die and go to heaven. When they get there they are stopped by St. Peter, who then says, "Sorry, heaven's crowding up, so you need to answer a question correctly, or else you can't get in." He looks at the teacher, and asks her: "What was the name of the famous ocean-liner that sank after hitting an iceberg?" "Oh, that's easy," the teacher replied, "the Titanic." So St. Peter let her into heaven. Next he turned to the petty thief. "How many people died on that ship?" St. Peter asked. "Oooh, that's tough, but I saw the movie, and it was 1,500." St. Peter stepped away and the thief walked into heaven. Finally, St. Peter turned to the lawyer. He simply said to him: "Name them."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
Karen Aerts, 37, of Antwerp, Belgium, was known to employees at the Olmense Zoo: she had "adopted" a cheetah, helping to support it by buying its food. They believe she hid out until the zoo closed, found the keys to the cheetah cage, and let herself in. She was mauled to death by the cat. "Karen loved animals," said zoo spokesman Jan Libot. "Unfortunately the cheetah betrayed her trust."

ON THIS DATE
On January 6, 1942 - The National Collegiate Football Rules Committee did away with the Y formation saying too many linemen shouted "Get yer butt out of my face" because of it. Today it is not thought a play in which the center FACES his own backfield would work well.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
A man singing at a karaoke bar in San Mateo, Rizal, Philippines, was so off-key that the security guard at the bar pulled his service revolver and shot him in the chest. Romy Baligula, 29, was killed. Security officer Robilito Ortega, 43, was arrested by police officers who happened to be nearby and heard the shot.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
"All marriages will be happy in the 1990s, for the law will put to death any man or woman who assumes conjugal position without the proper physical, mental and financial qualifications.' - author John Haberton, 1893.
