BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA
HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
FEBRUARY 2008 VOLUME 47 ISSUE 2

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: I hope everyone has a safe and prosperous new year. I now have the bowling schedule updated and I also have the new online newsletter set up to view and instructions on how to access it. Those are both later in the newsletter. Don’t forget to show your sanction cards and pay your dues this month if you haven’t already done so. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Arlen was not at the January gathering so Dennis opened the meeting and Gayle presented the treasurer’s report which passed. Three new member applications were voted on and also passed. Dennis informed the club that the new bowling schedule is the same as last year except for Palace is replacing Dynamic which closed. Ken informed the club that he is working on an online newsletter where members can view the newsletter whenever they want. Dennis passed out an award to Serge and presented the King and Queen Buzzard trophies to Martha Warnken for 66 splits and Bob Van for 41 splits. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 72 Buzzards at the gathering in January, one that did not bowl and 3 pacers. Our next scheduled gathering is on February 10th @ AMF Diamond Bowl 267 N. Forest Blvd. Houston (281) 440-9166. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: There are only two balls per lane during warm-up and not 10 minutes. First and last names of bowlers are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign the sheet at the end of bowling. If you requalify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for “THE ELLIE DEASON MEMORIAL THREE – IN – A- ROW “rolloff in January. Don’t forget, if you show up to bowl in your birthday month, you pay only $5.

Stupid State Laws
In South Bend, Indiana it is illegal for a monkey to smoke cigarettes. Violators are fined 25 dollars.

Who Could It Be?
She began ruling over the newly unified kingdom of Spain, with her husband, in 1479. One of their daughters went on to marry England’s Henry VIII. The Inquisition began under her reign, expelling all the Jews from Spain in 1492, but she is better known for another action that year. She sponsored an explorer who discovered the New World.

Sad Note:
Our Condolenses go out to Carl Sontag whose wife and Buzzard life member Rose Mary passed away on December 31, 2007. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!
Be my Valentine.

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

JOKE OF THE MONTH:
Late one night, a burglar broke into a house he thought was empty. He tiptoed through the living room but suddenly he froze in his tracks when he heard a loud voice say, "Jesus is watching you!" Silence returned to the house, so the burglar crept forward again. "Jesus is watching you," the voice boomed again. The burglar stopped dead again. He was frightened. Frantically, he looked all around. In a dark corner, he spotted a bird cage and in the cage was a parrot. He asked the parrot, "Was that you who said Jesus is watching me?" "Yes," said the parrot. The burglar breathed a sigh of relief, and asked the parrot, "What's your name?" "Clarence," said the bird. "That's a stupid name for a parrot," sneered the burglar. "What idiot would name a parrot Clarence?" The parrot said, "The same idiot who named the Rottweiller Jesus."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
When Calvin McDonald pulled into the Suffolk County, N.Y., jail to visit a friend, the officer at the security booth asked for his driver's license for identification. "I have no license," McDonald said. "It's suspended." The officer, who apparently saw him driving, asked, "It's suspended?" McDonald replied, "Yeah." A check found that was true: he had 31 suspensions on his record. He was arrested on charges of driving without a license. A check of his passenger, Donnitta Coffey, 21, turned up a warrant -- for "aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle."

ON THIS DATE
On February 10th 1934, The United States Postal Service issued the first stamps without perforations or glue in New York City. One had to cut apart the stamps, and then apply glue to the back to get them to stick to an envelope. After numerous complaints, the Postal Service changed this idea.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
Robert Hudson, 72, and Neal Shafer, 56, both lived in a hotel in Akron, Ohio. The two men got in a fight over Shafer refusing to move his car, which was parked in front of the hotel, so the city snow plow could clear the street in that spot. The fight got physical: Hudson was treated at a hospital for a split lip and a punch in the eye. When he got out they fought again, and Shafer went to the hospital with a laceration to his nose. When he got out they fought again -- and this time, police say, Hudson stabbed Shafer to death. He has been charged with murder.

MORONS:
In Morgantown, W. Va., a 911 operator who'd grown accustomed to taking calls about plumbing emergencies, admitted to superiors he was not paying full attention when a woman called to ask what to do now that her water had broken, and he asked if she knew the location of the shutoff valve.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
"The people of New York will practically live in the sky…there will be avenues of aerial gardens and sky golf courses. Instead of going up to the country, people will go 'up' for country air. There will be aerial hangars and airplanes will be as common as flivvers." - Architect and "urban visionary" Hugh Ferris, 1925.
